Book Contribution for "Regional Future Management" Volume 7: Establishment of a business under Regional economic perspective, Pabst Publisher, Lengerich 2013
By Prof. Dr. Ralf Otterpohl, Technical University of Hamburg (Translated by http://spaceoflovens.weebly.com ) Short version The city can only ensure a permanent and crises-proof supply of clean water, food and a livable environment with a functioning surrounding area. It is urgently necessary to develop concepts for the construction of productive village structures beyond the commuter settlements. To this end, the construction of socially attractive village structures in a beautiful environment is proposed based on highly efficient organic horticulture and many other production- and service facilities. The build-up of the humus layer is of crucial importance in order to improve productivity and to secure water regeneration, reduce flooding and drought, and prevent climate change. The New Villages can ensure their supply and that of the city in a kind of "garden ring" with a number of villages and 150 to 500 inhabitants in each village. By synchronized founder groups with cooperative financing models, the participating entrepreneurs can build an interesting, debt-free basis of life within 10 years, which already includes a significant part of old-age provision. In the medium term, new life perspectives can emerge for millions of people, which help to secure a future without hardship. Urbanization is not sustainable "In 2050, X% of all people will live in cities" and similar statements indicate the unreflected acceptance of a dangerous erroneous trend. Urbanization is the consequence of a globally extremely specialized society, which sees people essentially as consumers and workers. Urbanization creates dependencies on systems that are easily collapsing and which, in any case, only allow acceptable living conditions for a globally quite small minority. There is a lack of social visions for a future with diverse life designs for many. Our prosperity has to be disconnected from such global industrial processes, which are based on violation of basic human rights and the exploitation of our resources. With a seemingly robust economy it was over quickly, even in previously privileged regions of Europe. We are experiencing this in Greece and Spain, for example, where many active people are now going to the country side to be able to produce themselves. The formerly rescuing familial networks of city-country are braking up with every abandoned farm on and on. Agro-chemical farming is a dead end, leading at more and more sites through humus destruction to desertification and thus to climate change. The city needs a surrounding area with ecological horticultural culture and the preservation of fertile soils, only to retain water, food and a good local climate. The currently popular urban gardens are beautiful, but can only be a small part of a locally sustainable city; otherwise they degenerate easily to a fig leaf. Humans need diverse live perspectives, which are based on real value. Wealth and value creation in the rural environment Prosperity can be defined according to the Indian Nobel laureate Aratina Sen on the question "How much freedom can arise?”. Social perspectives, such as the new villages proposed here, are intended to particularly enable prosperity, the good life in freedom. The term “village” is been taken very ambivalent, there are connotations such as “rural idyll”, “no jobs” and “nothing going on”. Aging population and loss of infrastructure are very common currently. How to shape the villages of the future? How can the many millions of often governmentally funded and destroyed jobs on the countryside be regained in a significantly more attractive and ecologically positive way? Requirements for such a strategy can be:
Essential is the clarity about the necessities of life. The production of food requires a lot of work and fertile land. Soil can be improved very quickly, especially with small-part organic horticulture. This more fertile land is both climate regulating and the basis of improved local water supply, due to large scale soil improvement there are overall a good future prospects for many people in the region. Plants grow best if the soil contains very much humus. Dry periods are bridged by a high proportion of humus and heavy rain is sucked up like a sponge. At the same time, the ground water renews itself with excellently filtered water. Humus is the basis of life, of immeasurable value, it gives us life itself. However humus is to feed! Fortunately, the food of the soil is partly what is waste for us, but should be freshly prepared and crushed well. Woody and nutrient-rich bio-waste should form a meaningful mixture. What is important for a good future and rather effortless cultivation are the incredible possibilities of organic intensification, the use of the whole range of plant diversity and organic soil feeding. Even organic agriculture, particularly in horticulture, misses the particularly high yields with optimal soil nutrition. The plant then takes what it needs; it prefers the diet by bacteria and protoplasm (from decomposed living substances). In the meantime, it has been shown with very good science that plants can take up and digest macromolecules and even living bacteria (Paungfoo-Lonhienne et al., 2010). Permaculture gardener Herwig Pommeresche (Humussphere, OLV) has been harvesting 18 kg of onions per m² in South Norway for 18 years, where normally agrochemical as well as classical ecologically 2 to 3 kg can be expected. Similar to the carrots, which grow side by side and almost all are good and long. This is achieved by simple but ingenious feeding of the humus at high humus content. Kitchen waste or green waste is crushed in a blender, passed through a sieve. This gives good liquid fertilizer, while the in millimeters cut pieces are carefully worked into the humus-rich upper soil near the plants approximately once a month, and covered with mulch. From my own experience, I know that this creates an intensive soil life and thus the blackbirds are being enticed from areas, where the soil life is otherwise impoverished. The worms should then be protected. In Alaska there is a gardener who feeds plants with a very concentrated mixture of bacteria and thus also won many national prizes (Evans, 2010). Such approaches are feasible, which opens up new perspectives for the value of horticulture. Real value in synergistic village structures Soil is the basic production factor in the world; soil improvement improves productivity, water reclamation and stabilizes the climate. Property or a hereditary ownership right on a sufficient large piece of land means possible independence and security over generations. The well-known but hardly noticed possibilities of a highly efficient organic production of vegetables and cereals can already provide a basis for the livelihood. There can be a supply of fresh and wholesome products for the village and for the city nearby. In addition, a seasons comprehending supply can be set up via further processing. Beyond food, many other goods can be produced on the basis of crops. For this, old and partly forgotten knowledge can also be used. The following is an incomplete list of possibilities of commercial value added from locally available products. This list should show the possible diversity, but it is also clear that a lot of know-how, perseverance, further development, linking tradition and modernity (global knowledge) will be necessary. In many cases, a financial return in local dimension is rather to be expected, but at the same time partly low costs and ideally in case of high satisfaction in a stimulating social work environment. On some points enormous productivity increases with equal work from the global knowledge are known and noted, see also text and literature list.
This is a list of value creation opportunities with services in rural areas:
For rural resettlement there is much that can be learned from people living in economically disadvantaged regions of the world. So we can learn from West Africa that it is useful to have a low model diversity in cars and trucks that is robust and repairable. This makes maintenance and repair easier, old vehicles become spare parts bearings. Many countries have collective taxis that run a flexible liner service and also take goods with them. There are also "shelve stores", where suppliers are able to rent shelves in a shop operated by all tenants. Many techniques of development cooperation are also usable for us. Then there are the global traditional pre-industrial techniques and crafts that get a new significance in consideration of high energy costs and the desire for independence. A very cost-effective water and waste water infrastructure is important - many rural regions have been impoverished for a long time because the consultants involved in the turnover have built completely over-dimensioned systems. For the New Village, the Global Ecovillage Network (www.gaia.org) can also draw on a wealth of experience; however by a high demand on community not very many people could have been reached so far. Key elements for the realization of Garden Ring villages are funding models, besides the existing political will for a better future of the relevant area and development plans feasible on community level (an extended agricultural settlement privilege, etc.). It is inappropriate for democratic countries that banks have almost unnoticed profited by the "creation" of book money (about 85% of all money) since the introduction of democracy in England. The current discussion can be researched under the term "full money". In the process of lending, citizens and companies place real values against numbers on paper, about 70% of this multiplication of money is of benefit to private banks and not to the country. (Mayer, 2013) Fortunately this is recognized now, so states can easily end the financial crisis and indebtedness trap. On the basis of this knowledge it is possible to negotiate differently with banks. Local authorities and regional banks are to be addressed in particular. On the other hand, banks are not really necessary for village development. The Swedish JAK system (Humonde, 2012) is an interest free save-loan-save- model and can provide freedom from debt within 10 years by minimizing loan costs. This means that the most important part of a real-based old age provision is also completed. It is possible to build an at first small, highly efficient house for 1 to 2 people, with approx. 500 € per month after approx. 2 years, extended by a large greenhouse on perhaps 2500 m² own land and it is also possible to pay off all of this completely in another 8 years! The later neighborhood is getting together to plan and build the houses, also in co-operation with similar villages nearby. Building alone is already creating work. To prevent speculation in the New Village, a linkage of land prices to that of agricultural land makes sense. It is necessary to provide conditions for productive ecological management, as implemented in Lammas (Wales, UK). From the economic criteria, the development of new villages up to garden rings is feasible, it is now the chance for groups of entrepreneurs to build up models like this and develop them further in practice. Summarized version of the original article by V. Megre to the readers on the topic of designing kin domains. 2001. (Original in Russian, translated by Val Koryukov)
- Thank you Val & Mary Ann allowing me to share this with the world
Let’s get to the construction! But what kind? Here, I would like to, first of all, address the readers of my books. You are all commonly referred to as “Anastasians”, and therefore I will be using that term as well.
Dear Anastasians, you must begin building, immediately. However, the building must first begin within your own thoughts. At first, it is necessary to specifically and in detail to mentally model your domain and the future settlement as a whole. I will quote Anastasia, who speaks of what is necessary for the realization of the dream. Anastasia says that the dream will definitely manifest itself…-“If the dream is not too abstract. If all its details and smallest aspects are imagined and if they don’t contradict the laws of spiritual being. A dream like that is not always easy to build. It is required that this thought occurred at a lighting-fast speed and then it must also match the vibration of your emotional state. Then it will definitely manifest itself. It is only natural. Many experience this in their lives”. What is she talking about? Initially, it is necessary to plan your project up to the smallest details. You have to build the domain in your thoughts, show it on the paper, discuss it with your relatives and those close to you, as well as the specialists, and then you must also model the design of the whole settlement, at the same time taking into account all the problems. I will try to list some of them:
Important conditions that need to be taken into account when designing your domain:
What needs to be taken into account when designing a settlement:
Vladimir’s culture foundation was faced with these problems of design – as soon as the land was granted for building of an eco-village in Vladimirkiy district in Russia. It turned out that the project that meets all of the above demands did not exist in the world at the time. It was a strange situation: people have 39 invented an atomic bomb, technologically advanced machinery, spending unimaginable intellectual and financial resources, took a walk on the moon, however, they forgot to think about normal existence of at least one family. The society as a whole constantly gets many discussions, there have been created institutions that deal with country’s development, however, there does not exist a project on a domain for a separate family. But the whole society consists of separate families! What do we do? Let’s think together. I will tell you right away that to build the life as Anastasia did for herself, will be impossible, due to the following reasons:
We have to start, so to say, from zero. At first, we have to clean up where we have littered. We have to start creating our kin domain, our space of love, which will be fully functional and will start giving its fruits to our children and grandchildren. We have to connect that which is not connectable and create the unity of opposites: achievements of technocratic world and the pure world of nature. We will be the first ones of their kind and we will be always. We will be eternal because we won’t be working for immediate gratifications, but for the eternal – and therefore the eternal will be working for us. It will need us. More specifically, about the project? Who will bring it into being? Only we ourselves! How? We will be thinking together! Let’s try to take already existing typical projects of eco-houses with independent energy source – scientists have been working on this problem for many years now, united in a group called “Eco-house”. Let’s look at their projects, discuss them, bring in something from us, and adapt them to our area. It is a lot more difficult with the project of landscape design of our plot, with its plant and animal worlds. Project, that would meet all the demands, currently does not exist. It seems to be impossible to create by just one person. You would have to be an agriculture specialist, botanist, biologist, artist, etc., all at the same time. I think this should be a creation coming from a collective thought. Therefore I suggest: for Anastasians from different areas to unite in groups and start to simultaneously educate themselves and designing. It may seem strange to some that I suggest not to rush with the work directly on the land. I assure you that this is dictated by the wish not to make yet again those mistakes that we have been constantly repeating over many centuries, and probably millennia. For example, I was told that even on a one-fifth of a hectare of land during the summer period, there is a need to be working all day long if you want a good harvest. But here we have the whole hectare! However, as it turned out, with the correct design of your hectare, there will be less work required than on a one-fifth of a hectare. Judge for yourselves, according to Anastasia, quarter of a hectare should be set for forest / park area, and then 0.1-0.15 ha should be set to an orchard. Approximately 0.05ha will be taken up by the living fence, which will consist of bushes and trees. All this does not require constant maintenance like rows in a garden. And the leaves falling off the trees help fertilize the soil, help her recover herself. As a result, you won’t have the need to constantly purchase organic and non-organic fertilizers, and spend your efforts on delivering them into the soil. Animals that will be put in the forest zone, for example, horses, goats, chooks and bees, will not require constant care. When planting your forest zone, it is necessary to right away design natural residences for the animals that you plan on keeping in your domain. They have to be comfortable and look nice. Even a chook house can be made as a beautiful little house, being held up in the tree by the branches. Due to the fact that the forest zone will be surrounded by the living fence, there will be no need to shut the enclosures for the animals. Their free ranging will also help them feed themselves, even if only partially, and it will also spread the faecal matter, as opposed to concentrating it in one spot. You will not have to spend constant efforts on cleaning the stables from manure, the way it is done with the traditional farming. When mixed with the falling leaves and little branches, the manure will start forming an ideal fertile layer of soil inside the forest zone. Upper ground waters will be distributing this nutritional organic matter around the forest zone. Even if you have to use mulch from the forest zone in your garden, it will still be much easier and cheaper than bringing it from somewhere else. Also, the fertile layer forming in your forest will be much better quality and much more useful for the plants than purchased manure. Birds, who will build nests in the forest zone, will be collecting grubs and insects that damage the crops, therefore eliminating the need to use poisonous insecticides. As you can see, a proper planning of plantations on one hectare saves you from purchasing any fertilizers or poisons, at the same time reducing your work load. I would also like to mention about another important aspect. Let’s remember what the modern yards in the villages look like. A lot of the times a pretty good house is surrounded by very closely built old structures of various sorts, some used for keeping animals. In the yard – obviously from such neighbourhood you have dirt and foul smells. When the forest zone is present and animals live naturally in it, most of these problems can be avoided. Your house can be surrounded by flowers instead. To create something like this on a piece of land that is one-fifth of a hectare is impossible. It is impossible even because you will not be able to create a forest zone. Maturing trees will cover the rest of your’s or your neighbour’s plot with shade. Forest zone of your plot will not only serve as a housing for the animals and fertilize the soil. With the correct location and choice of plants, it can at the same time become almost the main source of products necessary for survival. Mushrooms, berries, medicinal herbs – this is only a small sample of a huge range of forest’s gifts. I can show this example: only ten cedar trees can meet the yearly demand of flour, oil, and milk for a family of three. All of these products can be extracted from the cedar nut. I had the honour to taste the dishes made from these products – and they are exquisite! This way, a person who plans their one hectare of empty land is like a programmer, who is creating and running a super advanced program. The dependence is solely on him: whether the program will have any faults when it is functioning, and will require constant corrections from him, or it will start working for centuries without further input and no faults, only improving on its own. The ideal situation will be when everything on your domain is functioning in such a way that, instead of a trip to the supermarket, you will be able to take the necessary product from your plot. Fresh, clean, ecological product, good for your health, and not some processed and canned product from the supermarket. Of course, it is impossible to achieve this in a year or two, however, you should be striving towards this, and that’s why I’m suggesting that you start thinking about it. I am suggesting that Anastasians first of all organize weekly seminars in their areas and invite to them specialists of various profiles, for example, older people who have achieved positive outcomes on their own plots in your area. You must collect information, turn on your thinking, imagine: how you will be living on your domain, not only you, but also your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anastasia’s knowledge can be also used in its fullness. However, it is necessary to consider that each area has its own features: climatic conditions, soil composition. Also you have to consider even the most unexpected factors. For example, I was faced with the following issue: in most areas of Vladimirskiy district, the tomatoes that were planted in the soil do not ripen. Even in the greenhouses they don’t always turn out good. “Why is this? – I am thinking. – In Novosibirskiy district tomatoes planted in the soil ripen, but in Vladimirskiy district, which is much more south and has much more temperate climate, they do not ripen. Why?” I was discussing this subject with the local residents as well as agricultural specialists. Many different explanations were proposed. “Not enough warmth” – but in Siberia the summer is even shorter. “Rain is contaminated” – but in greenhouses, they are artificially watered. “They always get this disease. They start rotting, starting at the root” – but what kind of disease, no one knows. Then I asked Anastasia: - “Why?”. She looked at a tomato plant and answers: “They don’t get enough light; there are many artificial clouds in the sky in addition to the natural ones. They hang, these artificial clouds, above this area and block the sunlight”. – “So this area is doomed if there are always clouds that are blocking the sunlight?” – “People who build their lives here made it this way. To the natural clouds, there are constantly artificial ones being added”, - and she points me to two huge pipes, each about fifteen metres in diameter. These are the pipes of coal power plant, they always produce steam and create clouds. Children’s education I call to all, and first of all Anastasians, to give much attention to the project of their future domain. This does not mean, however, that you must wait with building your future. Even if it takes you half a year, or even a year to work on this project, this period might turn out to be just as important as the life of your family in beautiful conditions of the future. The work on the project of creating your own domain – is a family work. If everyone will have a chance to participate in it, older parents, and children, then it is hard to imagine what can bring the family members together more than designing the project of your future and the future of the country. I did not make a mistake in saying “your future and the future of the country”, this is the way you should tell your children. If one family creates their hectare of land, turning it into Heaven on Earth, this, of course, will not have much effect on the economy and the ecology of the country. If the numbers of such families will be half of all families living in Russia, then Russia will become twice as beautiful, and the ecological condition will positively change. If your family includes children of pre-school and primary school age, then by letting them participate in this work, you might make it easier for them to study at school, making their experience at school more interesting and more effective. Today everyone can become a great creator, artists, or sculpturist. Your creations will be reflected not on the dead and dusty canvas, but in the eternal Earth. And you will be living in them. And your life will be wonderful! - V. Megre
How are Kin's Domains Settlements or Villages different from Eco-villages?
One way in which the Kin's Domain concept differs from the previous Eco-village model is by providing for each family on a Kin's Domain a minimum of one hectare, or 2.47 acres of land. A Kin's Domain can stand alone, or be part of a Kin's Domain settlement or village. Each village consists of multiple 1 hectare or larger plots owned by each family or domain settler. Another difference is, in the past Eco-village or commune model each individual was dependent on the collective always functioning and properly working together to meet the basic needs of all its members – especially in matters of food production. On a Kin's Domain each family/settler's goal is to become self sufficient, to stand on their own, with the surrounding domains creating a strong supportive network and community. Of course, there is a great need for working together in a Kin's community, and this vital work must begin before even a single person builds their own unique domain. Much forethought and planning is needed. In each village of Kin's Domains there will most likely be land that is shared by the collective community. This shared land could include such areas as: * a shared lake or large body of water * a school * a community meeting center * community agricultural lands or pasture * a visitor’s center * forest lands * riverside * roadway access, and more. With the flourishing of many Kin's Domains worldwide the responsibility of stewardship of the Earth is put back into the hands of the individual in a pragmatic and manageable way. With many people taking personal responsibility for the restoration of re-balancing the Earth’s natural systems the burden can be taken off the governments to provide all the solutions. The people themselves can take active participation in resolving the word’s many ails. When each Man of a nation can stand on his own then the nation as a whole can stand strong. Everyone who wishes should be provided the opportunity to responsibly steward and own a piece of their home, the Earth.
The Kin's Domain is presented inAnastasia (book 1) and the Ringing Cedars Series
(presently 9 books) written by Vladimir Megre. The series of books presents a unique perspective on history, society, family, education, spirituality and man’s relationship to nature. It presents some unique solutions to problems that are present throughout the world. Well worth reading. A Kin's Domain essentially means family home, though has far more to it than just being a home. The difference between the Kin's Domain and the current “family home” is that the land the Kin's Domain is based upon would have to be sufficiently large to sustain most food, water and building materials for the family living upon it in perpetuity, generation after generation after generation. The recommended size is at minimum one hectare (2.47 acres) . A Kin's Domain can stand alone, or be part of a Kin's Domain settlement or village. Each village consists of multiple 1 hectare or larger plots owned by each family or domain settler. Why one hectare? Because this is a sufficient minimum amount of land sizeable enough to sustain the basic life-long and multi-generational needs of each family or domain settler. This is an amount of land that can be stewarded sustainability by the efforts of an individual or family, without becoming too difficult to manage and that can be managed without the need for heavy industrial agricultural machinery or harmful chemicals and fertilizers or pesticides and without the need for reliance on declining fossils fuels. On a Kin's Domain each plot is created with the specific goal of being a self sufficient area that can support all the basic human needs of the owner including life-long food production, shelter and water supply. Each domain is designed with the specific intent of surrounding the home by a supportive natural Eco-system that will additionally support the domain owner by providing the cleaner air created by oxygen producing plant life, creation of forest land for the optional use of timber for seasonal home heating needs etc and a wide variety of other plant life with a focus on edible perennials as well as plants that can be grown for medicinal purposes. Ideally a Kin's Domain would be free from taxes and owned outright, with hereditary title in perpetuity, the Kin's Domain being passed on to the next of kin. A Kin's Domain would have some or all of the following features
People plant their garden and build their home according to their heart’s desire, in the way they find most pleasing. Although it would take quite an amount of work to establish, as well as many years (in some cases) for the plant and animal systems within the domain to reach equilibrium, it is possible when done well. To build and create their own Kin's Domain empowers people to feel and use their creative capacity again - it re-connects them to nature. The work you do to your own land - the land of your family is most enjoyable. It is meaningful - and you know and feel how much the land appreciates your love and care. It is not like you spend your live forces for anyone else's dream (eg. the company you work for, the boss you have ... ) you spend it to your very own Space of Love. You co-create with your family - dream and work together. Sharing the bliss of seeds sprouting in your garden, the happiness of your first harvest - the gratitude and love for this place, the earth that nourishes you so generous. This flooding of silent joy in your heart, when you watch your children play in the garden, the space of love you created. This is the end of separation and the start of connection. - What a beautiful and nourishing thought.
A Kin's Domain is not about spending all day working the land for your next feed, or spending hours grinding grain so you can bake tomorrow’s loaf of bread. It’s about creating a self sustaining system that provides all you need. It’s about working with nature, so that nature will work for you.
Kin's Domains are presented in practice by hundreds of Families around the world. The most of them are located in Russia.
