soL - Space of Love Village
a multi-generational Homesteading community
Inspired by the Space of Love/Kin’s Domain Movement around the world we set out to find this fertile ground to create our own Space of Love. Eventually we made our home on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Here we’ve found everything we were looking for to live an intentional life on the land & raising children in a natural way – pristine landscapes, mild climate, rugged coastline along the wild and lonesome ocean, deep green forests and clear streams, rivers, ponds and lakes, affordable land, natural abundance and bounty as seldom seen before and last but not least friendly and ever helpful local people.
“Cape Breton Island – Your heart will never leave” – this is what they say, and oh how true they are…
More than 3 years now we grow, work, perfect, admire & love our chosen homeland. We grow a big vegetable garden, a potato patch, built a greenhouse and a root cellar and planted an orchard. Our living fence is tiny yet growing. We live in a small but cozy and light home and over time, we are looking to improve the house to become an even more self-sufficient unit. We are not complete off-grid but strive to become so in the near future. Our kids are 1 and 6 year(s) old. We homeschool/unschool the older and are overall into a very natural parenting approach/natural child rearing. We love and enjoy the great outdoors, spending 90% of the summer out in the fields and forests, gardening, foraging, tending the wild or just enjoying a swim in the ocean or one of the nearby lakes.
For us, living on Cape Breton Island is a dream came true and we believe this place could make a suitable “home-base” for many more families with a similar attitude.

And so, this is to let the world know: We are seeking like-minded neighbors!
Other families with kids, or families to be or elderly people who are looking to share their wisdom and knowledge. People who have a common ideal for living. People who want to join a community based on the principal of live and let live. We are seeking for families (couples and individuals as well) who are looking for a slower pace, who want to lead a more self-sustainable and healthy way of life, families who want to escape the dept slavery and the business “rat race”. We are looking for people who miss the village!
So, if you are seeking to find this place to create your own Space of Love, plant a garden and co-create the best conditions for healthy living, creative work and raising children – come and meet us, feel the island, the space and consider to become our neighbors.
We do live on our land but it is not big enough to subdivide it any further.
However, there is plenty of vacant, affordable land available close-by.

We do live on our land but it is not big enough to subdivide it any further.

Why do we want to co-create this multi-generational
back-to-the-land community? What is our intention?
First and foremost: future puts us as drive with this idea. And with “Future” we mean our children. There is this old proverb saying: It needs a whole village to raise a child.
Since we are living in a quite rural area with not as many people around, we came to experience firsthand, how true this is. Kids need other people. At least our kids do. And not just kids their own age, but also other adults and elders who care about them - who are willing to spend quality time with them, who are joyful in sharing their ways on how to do things with the younger generations. Also, we want our children to be able to go beyond our living fence and visit their friends by bicycle or by feet and we want to welcome our neighbor’s kids just the like. Hassle free. Without making complicated arrangements for play-dates and driving them for kilometers to their friends. No, it needs to become easier again for everyone, not just the kids, to meet up and connect with each other. Wouldn’t it be great if you’d know your neighbor is just beyond that line of trees and shrubs over there, always ready to lead a helping hand? And your kids, can just go as they please and will find adults, elders and kids who care for them just as they were close relatives. And yet same time, you do have your own space, as everyone else does, and this space with its boundaries is respected by everybody just as you respect everybody else’s. And imagine, your kids are free to roam with other kids of different ages and elders and adults are close by to have an occasional eye on them. The burden of taking care for your kids, especially for you, you lonesome stay-at-home-moms, the burden is taken off of you bc there are other people too to share this responsibility and duty, and there are other stay-at-home moms too to meet up with … and maybe altogether, there will be less stay-at-home- moms with their partners gone, bc maybe this new way of living cuts down your families living expenses drastically, good local, sustainable grown food is available among the community of your neighbors to reasonable prices or maybe even just for free because they share their surpluses just as your share yours – and so your partner may not need to go far to make a living. Maybe you both are even able to make your talents your passions, your gifts into a small income that is yet big enough to provide for all the financials means your family may need. And imagine, once you start growing your own Space of Love it will evolve gradually, year after year. The fruit trees you planted when you first came to your land may give you an abundance of all-natural, pesticide-free, healthy and just delicious apples or plums, pears or cherries just after 5 years of living on the land – and they may provide those healthy, delicious fruit for your children and grandchildren – the generations that come after you – just the same and most likely even more abundantly. Isn’t this alone reason enough to go for this idea?
But also imagine, you are able to provide your family with the best and healthiest, the most energetic food, the food you grow yourself on a small piece of land without the use of heavy agricultural machinery but with your loving devotion acting as the best fertilizer of all. Imagine how your own health and the health of your family increases by eating these clean and pure products of your land. And it’s not just your health that will increase, it also the health of the whole community around us – the community who is into a common way of living but also the community who is not. We are able to share our produce with the poor and the unhealthy and with the businessman and the homemakers around us who have not yet found their way to gardening, but do other things to support our global community of families. And I’m not just talking of people who consider themselves to belong to the Space of Love movement, but I’m talking about all the other people too. Wouldn’t they profit from a strong gardening community around them? Wouldn’t every community thrive if more local, highly nourishing food is available to all members of the community at fair prices? If labor is available as neighboring help? If talents and gifts and most of all knowledge is freely shared among the community? If elders and kids have their inclusive place - if they make the center of communal live – saving and passing on the wisdom of the ancestors to the generations to come and connect the liveliness of the kids with the wisdom of the elders. Both of them have time to spend to spare to give; we should not keep them separate just among themselves.
So this idea addresses a vast scope of challenges we are facing today. It sets first steps into a direction to SOLVE the problems of nowadays society: dept slavery, living in the rat race, unemployment and poverty, declining population of the rural areas, overpopulation of the cities, food dependence, crime, decreasing birth rates caused by an insecure future, physical and mental illnesses, addiction, the growing gap between generations, not enough quality childcare and care for the elderly people just to name a few.
We envision a Cape Breton made up of many happy, healthy families. Families from all parts of Canada and maybe even the world. (Families from different social and cultural backgrounds). Families made up from elders, adults, children and grandchildren, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters, both by blood and in spirit. Families who are united by the idea of the perfection of their dwelling space – united in creating their own beautiful oasis’ and co-creating and fitting together their blooming space with all the other blooming spaces around them to make one big Space of Love – maybe even an Island of Love – and this island may lead the way for other communities around the world to a happy and sustainable future for all of us.
So, this is us, this is what we were looking for and where we’ve found it. This is the vision we have for this place and again: This is our urgent call for like-minded neighbors!
We are calling YOU! Let’s co-create together. Let’s unite. Let’s think in generations, not just in years. Let’s rise and thrive together and again create the best conditions for a healthy live, creative work and raising children.
Let’s revive the village! Let’s do it!
